Maintenance at Redstone Arsenal Orchards, Huntsville

May 13, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

In April, the Alabama Chapter planted its first round of B3F2 seedlings at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, and hundreds of seedlings are on the way for a future fall planting. In the meantime, help is needed to maintain the seed and backcross orchards, such as weed whacking & pulling, removal of tree shelters, and a general clean-up of the orchard is in order. We’ll meet at 9:00AM at the Gate 9 Visitor Center (intersection of Rideout Road and Redstone Gateway on the south side of I-565).

During last month’s planting, there wasn’t a chance to lay down weed barrier fabric. Our goal on May 13 is to place individual weed barrier patches around the emerging seedlings to reduce competition from grass and weeds.

At this event we’ll be recruiting/organizing a regular volunteer crew that can help maintain the orchards on a regular basis. Come prepared to sign up or contact TACF’s Southern Regional Science Coordinator, Ed Schwartzman beforehand and let him know of your interest in becoming a team member to help maintain the Redstone Arsenal plantings.

We need to know the number of volunteers to expect, so please RSVP to Ed to participate
in this volunteer opportunity: ed.schwartzman@acf.org/434-906-9312.
