MD – Spring planting at our WSSC seed orchard

March 25, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Our Chapter members and non-member volunteers will plant about 1250 nuts at the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) seed orchard this spring. The large group of University students who helped us plant here last spring are not available on our planting date this year so we will need a good turnout of our members and other volunteers. There is no age limit for this activity. Last year our volunteer’s ages ranged from about 10 to past 80. This is an excellent environment and research related activity for children, grandchildren and their friends.  All of the tools and materials will be provided, although you may want to bring a favorite trowel. We will have bottled water but at the moment are not planning to provide lunches. If this changes there will be an updated notice.
Directions:
This orchard is located on WSSC property, on the west side of the Triadelphia Reservoir, near the village of Sunshine. Sunshine should be easy to find, as it is at the crossing of two major Montgomery County roads – Georgia Ave. (Rt 97) and New Hampshire Ave (Rt 650}. From Sunshine go a half mile north on Georgia Ave, to a right turn onto Triadelphia Lake Rd. On Triadelphia Lake Rd. go about a quarter mile, and just past a couple houses. Turn right through a field gate onto a gravel path. This is a new road since last year and is passable by any type of vehicle. Take this field road for about a third of a mile to the orchard. If you plan to come please email Ron Kuipers at m_rkuipers@yahoo.com .
