Small Stem Assay at New Kent Greenhouses – July 20

July 20, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

On Friday, July 20 from 9:00AM-2:00PM, TACF’s VA Chapter will be conducting small stem assays at the greenhouse at the Department of Forestry New Kent Forestry Center, New Kent, VA.

The small stem assay is one method being tested to progeny test large numbers of container-grown chestnut seedlings for resistance to chestnut blight. In the small stem assay, the stems of chestnut seedlings are inoculated with chestnut blight fungus and canker length is measured every 4 to 6 weeks. The results may help inform us of the most resistant families in our breeding program.

This is relatively fun and easy work, which can be done sitting down inside the ops building adjacent to the greenhouse. Bring water, snacks, and lunch.

For more information, contact Mid-Atlantic Regional Science Coordinator, Tom Saielli at (828) 450-9100 or tom.saielli@acf.org.

Directions note: Once you turn into the Forestry Center take the next right on George Dean Highway (it’s actually a small gravel road). About 3/4 miles, take a left at the fork onto John Heltzer Lane. The greenhouse will be just down the road on the left, you can’t miss it.
