Efforts to restore American chestnut produces line of blight-resistant trees

Original American chestnut door sill discovered in 200-year-old Maine farmhouse
Nathan Clark of Dresden, Maine, replaced the front door sill on his 200-year-old farmhouse and discovered the original sill to be American chestnut. Dresden, located in the mid-coast area of Maine, would be pushing the northern limits of the natural boundaries of the American chestnut. The 40-ft. sill is still moderately sound for about half of its length.
Nate, whose business is the restoration of old houses and barns, indicated that American chestnut was the wood of choice in rural Maine in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It was readily available, easy to work, and had a long, straight, durable trunk.
